Huntington Disease ProgramHuntington’s disease is a progressive hereditary disease for which there is no cure. The Huntington’s disease program is a collaborative effort between our facility and the Huntington’s Disease Society of America Center of Excellence at Washington University. The physicians, residents and social workers from Washington University periodically evaluate our Huntington’s disease residents throughout the year, offering Huntington’s disease-specific medical care and provide educational programs for the staff. Our goal is to providing the highest quality disease-specific care for those affected by Huntington’s disease. Our 24-bed Huntington’s disease program features a secure courtyard, which allows our residents to safely enjoy the outdoors. The activity area of this unit has its own kitchen where, under the supervision of staff, residents can participate in cooking classes, prepare snacks or bake cookies. Our staff provides care and activities that build on the strengths of our residents, while minimizing limited functions. Assessments are performed quarterly, or as needed, to ensure the best treatment plan for each resident. Temporary or respite stays offer the residents with Huntington’s disease an opportunity to visit with us from a few days to a month while the primary caregiver is away.
